Indian Standards (IS) are published by the Bureau of Indian Standards and form the primary reference framework for construction materials testing in India. ASTM standards, published by ASTM International, are widely referenced in international projects and by clients following global specifications.
While both sets of standards often test similar properties, such as compressive strength, penetration, or particle size, the exact test methods, sample dimensions, and acceptance criteria can differ. This is why the applicable standard should always be confirmed before testing begins.
For contractors working on projects with international clients, funding agencies, or joint ventures, project specifications may explicitly call for ASTM methods even within an Indian project. In such cases, the testing laboratory needs to be equipped and experienced in both frameworks.
Clarifying which standard applies at the start of a project, and requesting that the reference standard be mentioned in every test report, helps avoid disputes over test results later.
