The Importance of Water Quality Testing in Construction

Water is one of the most basic materials used in construction, yet its quality is frequently taken for granted. Water used for mixing concrete or curing needs to be free from harmful concentrations of chlorides, sulphates, and organic impurities that can interfere with the hydration process.

Excessive chloride content, for instance, can accelerate corrosion of reinforcement steel, while high sulphate levels can lead to expansion and cracking in concrete over time. These effects are often not visible until years after construction, which is exactly why testing at the outset matters.

Basic parameters such as pH, turbidity, total dissolved solids, and hardness give a quick indication of water suitability, while more detailed chemical analysis can identify specific contaminants when the water source is uncertain, such as borewell or recycled water.

For any project relying on a new or untested water source, a laboratory water quality check is a small step that protects against a much larger and harder-to-diagnose problem later.
